Having been an active contributor to our beloved scene for over 20 years, Mike Buhl has helped
influence and shape what is the House and Techno scene in Melbourne today.
An extremely passionate artist and selector of other peoples music, Mike expresses his creative
direction as a DJ, a live performer, producer and mix engineer. A lover of analog outboard gear new
and old, modern technologies, he is a true sonic explorer. A Modern Explorer.
Today, Mike’s focus is based around refining his unique sound. Forging a timeless aesthetic through
cutting edge sound design, warm, warped and coloured atmospheric elements nodding to a bygone
era. Layered, saturated percussive loops and a heartbeat forged in the history of techno and broken
beats. This project references the new and old, while remaining unique and is expressed via the
Modern Explorer series of releases on local imprint Denude.
Examples can be found on Mike’s latest EP. A diverse selection of techno explorers are underpinned
by an incredible remix from Berghain legend Tobias. Forthcoming, is the next chapter in this series.
Again, a diverse selection of ambient and techno explorers, this time complimented by another
legend, prolific producer and live act .Vril.
This new direction and focus is drawing attention and stands out as a body of work Mike hopes will
contribute positively to our scene, giving back to something that has given so much to him.
Looking back over the last decade, numerous releases across the house and techno sphere can be
found alongside collaborations and remixes. Most notably, the ‘Geelong Breakfast Club’ project
being one with Pampa’s Dave DK and Moodmusic / Blackhead Studios head honcho Sasse. More left
of field projects like remixes for popular Australian icons Infusion and singer Bertie Blackman round
out the diverse range Mike has enjoyed delivering.
