Modern Explorer II

Australian producer Mike Buhl returns to Denude with Modern Explorer II — a four-track EP that deepens his exploration of techno, downtempo, and atmospheric sound design.

Extending on Part I, this second instalment showcases restraint and introspection, while connecting the forward momentum energy found on the dancefloor.

Opening piece “Voyage Return” establishes the tone through use of distressed percussion, the combination of widescreen strings, driven forward by a rolling 1/4 time signature. The effect is powerful, cinematic and uplifting

“Focal” then steps into the foreground with a cut for the dancefloor. Driven by straight percussion, a booming bottom end and restrained melodic phrasing. Its timeless chord progression and measured tension mark it as the EP’s standout — a track built for both dancefloor immersion and deep listening.

On the flip, Vril delivers his interpretation of “Voyage Return” in his unmistakable style. Layered with dubby chords and thick, driving low end, this rework respectfully brings the original into peak-hour territory.

Closing track “They Were Always” drifts into downtempo terrain, rich with detailed textures, euphoric vocal harmonies, and a warm evolving bassline. It’s a reflective and beautifully crafted finale that encapsulates the release’s sense of space and depth.

Across the record, Buhl maps out a continuum between rhythm and reflection — music for late nights, long distances and sonic exploration.
